Innovative Year 6 pupils decided that, as part of their Lenten fundraising challenge, to do a sponsored walk from their school in Athersley to the Town Hall and back in aid of Barnsley Hospice.

They were equipped with buckets to collect money from passers-by and managed to collect over £30 along the way! They were accompanied by their teacher, Mr Mullen and teaching assistant Mrs Eckford.

Many children managed to raise a staggering amount through sponsorship; but Jessie Richardson (pictured centre) decided that she was going to set the ultimate challenge and has raised over £500! Her proud mum, Debbie said, “I took the sponsorship form into work and everyone wanted to help Jessie achieve her £500 goal. The support has been phenomenal.”

Mr Mullen, who organised the event, was very proud of the commitment from the class; and that they had shown a great deal of enthusiasm for the worthwhile charity.  He commented that many members of the public had stopped to praise the pupils on their behaviour and attitude.

The walk took them over 3 hours to complete but all were in high spirits when they returned. The final amount raised by the walk is over £1800!
